These are Melbourne's top car smash high risk zones

Sheen Group on 30 August 2016

  • Smash zones located across the city and the surrounding suburbs
  • Hotspots all feature multi-lane roads with high speed limits
  • Motorists advised to be extra careful in these locations

An analysis of Melbourne's car smash high risk zones has revealed the city's five riskiest areas.

The locations named span across the city's suburbs. However, there are a number of commonalities. For example, locations all feature multi-lane roads with relatively high speed limits.

Also highly represented within the analysis are roads with bustling intersections and lots of traffic lights, which ensure a steady flow of vehicles, as well as congestion on most days.

When driving in these car smash high risk zones, drivers are urged to be extra careful, to leave plenty of space between them and the driver in front, and also to slow down in difficult weather.

6. PRINCESS HIGHWAY DANDENONG

5. Princess Highway, Dandenong

The first of these five car smash high risk zones is the stretch of Princes Highway, which runs through the heart of Dandenong. This could be partly due to the high level of traffic which accumulates in the area. Dandenong's market, plaza, and hospital are all close to this location.

Springvale Road has had such a high number of vehicle collisions that it actually appears twice on this list. The part which runs through Springvale, though, according to the numbers is (slightly) safer.

However, drivers should still take caution when driving on any part of Springvale road because of its above average instances of collisions.
